Greetings from Governor
Gangwon is the land of opportunity and promise for research and business development of high-tech knowledge industries.
A high-tech industrial cluster called 'Gangwon TechnoValley Triangle' has been constructed in the three growth point cities of Chuncheon, Wonju, and Gangneung during the last 10 years to promote three knowledge-based industries: biotechnology/marine biology, medical devices, and fine ceramics. The outcome is the three high-tech science/industrial parks in the Province of Gangwon: biotechnology High-Tech Town in Chuncheon, medical devices Techno-Valley in Wonju, and marine biology/ceramics Science Park in Gangneung. Medical device became the top export industry in Gangwon, exceeding 200 million USD in 2007. Gangwon TechnoValley Triangle is evolving into the top biomedical cluster in Korea.
The Gangwon Knowledge Industry Project II (2008-2012) is a challenge to the 2nd Great Leap of Gangwon TechnoValley Triangle. By 2012 50 million USD will be invested in research and business development for completion of the industrial infrastructure of Gangwon TechnoValley Triangle and enhancement of core competence and competitiveness of the Gangwon knowledge economy in the domestic and international markets. In addition to Gangwon Knowledge Industry Project II, another ambitious 50 million USD program called Gangwon Healthcare/Medical Tourism Project (2009-2011) began this year to expedite export of biomedical products and create a new medical tourism market in Gangwon.
Open innovation is the key for the success of both Projects, including international collaboration of science and technology with overseas partners. The doors of Gangwon TechnoValley Triangle are wide open for strategic alliance, R&D partnership, or foreign direct investment.
Gangwon TechnoValley Triangle is the future of Gangwon Province.
Thank you.
Jin-Sun Kim Governor of Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea
